How it all Started
Here is the story:
On December 15, 2012, the day after the Newtown tragedy occurred, 2 courageous children: Kevin and Alexis Lariviere, decided to make a difference and wanted to help in some way. They each called a friend and invited them to help set up a coffee and hot chocolate stand at the end of their quite cul-de-sac street in Madison, Connecticut. They made huge signs, posted the event on facebook, bundled up for the frosty morning, and wheeled a wagon full of goods up the street. They sold coffee and hot chocolate from morning till sunset to passerby's. Much to everyone's surprise, they raised $430 dollars in one day! Bubbling, with great enthusiasm, they asked, "How do we get the money to the families?" However, after researching, they discovered that very quickly, Newtown had become inundated with assistance in every form, overwhelmed, and ultimately overloaded. The children decided to tuck the money away and brainstorm a plan.
Just after New Year's Eve, the idea came to them. They wanted to create a project for families who were feeling terrible loss and pain after losing a loved one. They knew just what to do. Kevin, Alexis and their mom Shari, have known and worked with Woody (Robert) Wilkins for years. He quickly became another piece of this beautiful puzzle. Woody is the creator and director of www.danceseswithwood.org, which is a woodworking empowerment program for children in hospitals with serious illness. Woody creates wooden kits that children can build in bed, in a hospital setting, which has proven to foster the healing process for these kids and is now in over 26 states, 33 hospitals and has served over 26,000 children in the United States.
Kevin and Alexis said, "Let's create our own program for kids and adults who have lost a loved one." They called Woody Wilkins right away. The project, they decided would have layers of healing and empowerment built in. And so the journey began. After weeks of brainstorming, the name The Healing Hope Chest was born, and the creation of the Building and Healing Guidebook began with the help of their mom, Shari.
Shari is a teacher and an accredited Journey/Guided Meditation practitioner which proved to be very helpful in writing the healing portion of the Guide Book. Together, as a team, they began writing the Healing Guide book for those experiencing grief, loss and transition. Their goal was to make it appropriate for all ages and circumstances, whether a five year old's turtle died or a 105 year old's spouse died, this program would help and empower anyone experiencing loss.
When you purchase a Healing Hope Chest Kit for yourself or as a gift for a friend, you will get everything needed to build a beautiful Healing Hope Chest and also receive the powerful guide book to assist you on your journey.
